Laurus nobilis is an aromatic, flowering, evergreen shrub or tree.  It belongs to the Lauraceae botanical family and grows beautiful smooth green glabrous leaves.  It is a native of the Mediterranean, and is commonly referred to as sweet Bay, Bay leaf, Sweet Laurel or Laurel Leaf and is popular in kitchens as it used for culinary seasoning to spice up dishes.

            It is used in traditional Tunisian medicine for the treatment of various health ailments such as rheumatism, and neurological disorders.  This plant medicine demonstrates many beneficial effects, especially for those who may suffer with cognitive issues such as Alzheimer's and dementia.  Its action is achieved through the modulation of neurotransmitters that trigger cholinergic activity and generates antioxidant effects. Laurus nobilis L. possesses potent compounds, such as 1,8-cineole and a-terpinyl acetate, which contribute to this botanicals memory enhancing benefits.

This study found on MDPI described other potential benefits from this potent plant extraction.  According to section 6.1. of the study titled "Characterization for Essential Features and Classification", this plant acts as a sedative, a muscle-relaxant, an anticonvulsant, and has anti-stress benefits.

            The plant also expresses other beneficial actions including antifungal / fungicidal, antibacterial, insecticidal, as well as antinematodal / anthelmintic action against pathogens and parasites.  his botanical possesses bicyclic monoterpenes a-pinene and ß-pinene, which contribute to the plants medicinal characteristics,  This plant extraction expresses lipophilic qualities, and anticarcinogenic effects.  The spicy aromatic leaves contain several phenylpropene derivatives, including eugenol, methyl eugenol, and elemicin which contribute to the plants ability to act as an anesthetic beneficial for easing pain, and is hypothermic, acting to regulate body temperature.
